HYYH at 10 Years: Why This Era Changed Everything for BTS (and ARMY)

(I know I’m a little late posting this, but let’s be real: the HYYH era deserves to be celebrated any day of the year.)

Happy 10th Anniversary to BTS’s ICONIC album to The Most Beautiful Moment In Life pt. 1! (AKA HYYH). I am a newer ARMY myself (as I’ve been a fan since 2020 during the start of the pandemic) and never got to experience this BTS era in real time. BUT, in celebration of its anniversary, I’ve decided to make a full mini master list (for newer ARMY and older ARMY alike!) This era is beautiful, tragic, soft, painful — and deeply, unmistakably BTS.

It’s where they stopped just making music and started telling stories. So whether you’re a newer ARMY trying to understand what the hype is about, or a longtime fan here to cry with me all over again, this post is for you. From their hiphop roots to pop, here’s a look at how BTS’s music changed in the best way possible!

So if you’ve ever asked, “Why does everyone lose their minds over HYYH?” — let’s talk about it. 💿

Before HYYH: BTS’s Debut and Hip-Hop Roots

Let’s take it back to June 10th, 2013 an iconic day in history. BTS debuts! RM, SUGA, J-Hope, Jin, Jungkook, V and Jimin release their debut song called No More Dream. The song where it all starts! BTS burst onto the scene with raw energy and a message: “What’s your dream?” They weren’t like your typical idols. They were loud, passionate, and basically said everything young people were too scared to say out loud.

Their early albums (2 Cool 4 SkoolO!RUL8,2?Skool Luv Affair, and Dark & Wild) were full of hard-hitting hip-hop tracks — including some unforgettable songs like “N.O”“We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2”“Boy in Luv,” and “Danger.”The energy was intense, the message was loud, and the boys were on a mission to be heard.

But then came 2015.
And suddenly… things got softer. Sadder. More complicated. That’s when HYYH, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, was born.

HYYH Meaning:

HYYH basically translates into The Most Beautiful Moment In Life and in Korean it means “Hwa Yong Yeon Hwa.” It’s one of those poetic phrases that has a deep meaning behind it. Youth, while beautiful and full of life in that moment, can never last forever.

The Official Start of the BU (aka the Bangtan Universe):

The lyrics hit differently and even deeper. It was BTS through and through but just a little bit polished. It wasn’t just about fighting the world anymore — it was about trying to survive it.

And this, was the iconic start of the BU (BTS/Bangtan Universe) where ARMYs would stay up late at night trying to piece together a very interesting puzzle, spiraling with theories and watch scenes over and over again to figure out possibly something that had moved in the background that could be of any significance to the storyline. It was the beginning of something so much bigger than we realized.

I won’t get into too much detail about the storyline because that’s just a whole master list in itself. If you ever want me to dive deeper and share my theories or thoughts on it, let me know in the comments!

I Need U gets BTS their first music show victory!:

Their title track, I Need U, was a big success for BTS earning them their first M-Countdown music show victory! In K-pop, music show wins are a huge milestone. It’s how artists get recognized publicly for their success in Korea — based on performance, streaming, fan votes, and a bunch of other stats. (Then afterwards, they would perform the song after they win as an encore for the fans.) And for BTS, who had been working nonstop for two years straight without a single win? This was their validation. It was proof that people were finally seeing them.

My Personal Favorite Tracks from HYYH:

When I first dove into BTS for the first time (after watching a few music videos and performances) I had listened to their whole discography from beginning to where we currently are today. I remember hearing The Most Beautiful Life for the first time and just being absolutely in shock after hearing such hard core like hip hop (along with a few beautiful ballads here and there). They fully transitioned into a completely different sound that had me so shook, I didn’t realize (at the time) how much of an impact this album gave BTS their new sound. And yeah… it hit me hard. (For each song, below it is my favorite performance of it!)

  • I Need U – DUH! This song is such a bop and if people say they hate it, they are probably lying. Fun fact, at first they were going to use the lyrics “I need you friend.” But the members said it didn’t sound right so they changed the lyrics to girl for it to sound better. But the song isn’t really about a girl, as some may think! Though RM and SUGA are the main writers for BTS songs, it was probably a group and or collaborative decision between the production team to give it a more romantic and emotional edge to fit in more with the BU.
  • Boyz With Fun – An underrated B-side in my opinion, even though they have performed it at concerts in the past. It’s just so much fun! At every concert, Taehyung (V) would come up with a silly dance during the chorus and the other members would follow in suite. This song is just a fun vibe that I feel like not a lot of people appreciate!
  • Converse High – What can I say about this song? It’s such a vibe and once again, another underrated B-side! It’s basically BTS having way too much fun — and yes, the lyrics were inspired by RM’s real-life obsession with Converse shoes. Yes, you read that correctly. Back then, he was known for loving Converse sneakers (specifically red ones), and apparently, he lowkey hated when girls wore high tops because he thought they made legs look shorter. So naturally… they turned that into a song. Iconic behavior. The track is playful, unserious, and kind of unhinged and that’s why it’s one of my faves.
  • Moving On – This one hits all the feels. I love this song for so many reasons but specifically, because of the lyrics. Especially towards the end when RM speaks: “Everyone’s afraid of changes
Staying, moving on, staying, moving on… We keep repeating the same things, again and again. What’s important is, that we still breathe and live in the same place
    So let’s move on.”
    • It’s about closing one chapter and stepping into the next, even if it may seem scary. At the time, BTS had just moved out of their very first dorm, the one where all seven members shared one room with bunk beds crammed wall-to-wall. That tiny space was where they trained, dreamed, laughed, cried and grew together. And Moving On captures that shift so beautifully. It’s not just about changing locations. It’s about growing up, evolving, and learning to let go of what once felt like home while still holding it in close to your heart. They were moving forward, together and that makes this song feel so personal and beautiful.

And that’s a wrap on The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 1: the start of something so much bigger than we all realized at the time.

This album changed everything. It gave BTS their first win, kicked off the BTS Universe, and introduced a softer, more emotional side to their music that still defines their sound today. Even years later, it holds up like a time capsule of youth, growth, and quiet heartbreak.

Whether you lived through the chaos in 2015 or discovered it later (like me!), HYYH (The Most Beautiful Moment In Life) Pt. 1 is one of those albums that stays with you forever. If you guys would like, I can make another post about the whole trilogy or just HYYH pt. 2 and Young Forever! They deserve their own emotional deep dives as well! hank you, HYYH Pt. 1.

Happy 10 years to an era that changed BTS and all of us: forever.

What are your favorite songs from the album or the whole trilogy as a whole? If you’re an older ARMY, do you have a favorite memory attached to this album? Did you see any of the songs live and what lyrics hit you harder the most! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Hey everyone! My name is Zoe and I am currently 27 years old living in Brooklyn, New York. I've been an avid fan of K-pop since the start of the pandemic. In 2020, I was really bored at home on a random day in April and was looking on youtube for something new to watch. I decided to see what the hype surrounding BTS was all about and why they (and K-pop) were so popular and since then, I've been to 12 plus kpop concerts and they have been an absolute blast and I can't wait to go to more in the future!
